baby ombré :: a quilt tutorial

If you're looking to make an inexpensive baby gift... this quilt is perfect for you. It can easily be created in an afternoon.
I was inspired by Vanessa Christenson's ombré baby quilt and decided I wanted to make a similar one with half-square triangles. I love how it ended up looking like an ombré chevron.. kind of on accident!

The final measurement of this quilt is 36" x 36" (but can easily be made larger for an adult size!)

What you'll need (for the quilt top only):

1 1/4 yards of Vanessa Christensen's ombré fabric in grey
Rotary cutter//mat OR scissors
Sewing machine
Coordinating thread
Pencil OR chalk pencil

Step One: Start by cutting 36 7" squares from your fabric.
That should give you (approximately) 12 lights, 12 mediums, and 12 darks. Separate them!

Step Two:
Start with the darks, and take 6 of the 12 squares and draw a line (with pencil or chalk pencil) from one corner to the opposite corner. (this is super similar to the chevron tote we made a while back!)
Do this same thing with 6 of the squares from the dark pile, the medium pile, and the light pile.

Step Three:

Match up a square that has been drawn on with a square that has not been drawn on.

Here's how I broke it down:

6 mediums with 6 darks

6 mediums with 6 lights

6 darks with 6 lights

(you can do it however you want.. but I wanted this variety!)

Place the squares you have partnered up right sides together, pin & sew 1/4" from the drawn line on each side of the line.

Step Four:
When you've sewn both of your seams on all of the squares, cut down the line you drew.

Step Five:
Head to the iron and press your seams towards the darker fabric.
When all of your seams are pressed, line up your new squares in the order you want them to appear on your quilt.

Step Six:
Start with the top row, and sew all of the squares together with 1/4" seam allowance. Sew all the rows together individually and then sew those rows together.
Then you have your quilt top!
It should measure about 36" x 36"

*BONUS*
I backed my quilt in Vanessa Christenson's grey chevron print and binded it in the same grey ombré fabric I used on the top.
I needed a yard for the backing and about 1/4 yard for the binding.
I quilted it along the BIG chevron lines you can see (so, 6 long stitches).
